Sweet and Sour Pork

Trouble brews in the Oinky-Boinky Village
when the three pigs and the wolf open
opposing cafés.
What's the book about?
Do you remember the story of the Three Little Pigs – where the big bad wolf huffed and puffed and blew the pigs’ house down? My children’s picture book app, Sweet and Sour Pork, is an interactive rewrite of that classic story.
In the original version, the pigs always got real upset each time the big bad wolf destroyed their home. But in my version, Old Pig merely shrugs his hammy shoulders after each wolf attack and says, ”Could be a piggy plus...could be a piggy minus.”
Now, you might be wondering about the title of my book: Sweet and Sour Pork. Is this a story about Chinese takeout (or ‘takeaway’ as we call it here in Australia)? Not quite...
“Sweet and sour” are a pair of seemingly opposite qualities – much like “good and bad,” “light and dark,” “beautiful and ugly.” But life is rarely ever black and white – instead, it’s usually shades of gray – and sometimes it’s hard to tell what’s really good and what’s really bad.
The message behind my book is that a “bad” person or event that shows up in our lives can actually be a blessing in disguise. Alternately, what seems like a “good” experience may actually turn out to harm us.
Children will have fun reading or listening to the playful language in this book. Simultaneously, they’ll learn to question the nature of what happens in life. When the wolf huffs and puffs and blows the house down, is it a bad thing, or is it a good thing?
